Elmer Martin Hersom was born November 4, 1924 in Deuel County, Minnesota to Richard and Helen (Wells) Hersom. He grew up in the Gary area and attended country school through the 8th grade. On October 14, 1943, Elmer was united in marriage to Alpha Monson at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby, MN. They were married for almost 73 years and were blessed with four daughters, eleven grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Elmer was proud to serve his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army. He received Basic Training in Little Rock, AR before participating in WWII as a Mortar Gunner in the Philippines and Japan and was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned home to pursue his love of farming. Elmer and Alpha farmed together until they retired and moved to their home in New London, MN. Elmer also raised livestock including cattle, hogs, and chickens.
Elmer passed away May 18, 2016. He attained the age of 91 years, 6 months, and 14 days. Elmer is survived by his children and their spouses: Barbara (Harlan) Wicks of Palmetto, FL; Janice (Richard) Severson of Lakeville, MN; JoAnn Brown of Pflugerville, TX; and Connie (David) Hudson of Rochester, MN; nine loving grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren; sisters Viola Mork of Madison; and Bonnie Haverberg of Kent, WA; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents; granddaughters Nicole Ann Hudson and Sandra Zywicki; sister Doris (Eugene) Gilbert; brother Lyle (Katherine) Hersom; and brothers-in-law Gaylord Mork and David Haverberg.
