Edward Peter Schommer was born January 15, 1932, the son of John & Anna (Eischens) Schommer, in St. Leo. He grew up in Madison. Ed graduated from high school in 1951. He served his country in the United States Army where he was a Mess Sargeant. He was in charge of the kitchen and other cooks. Following his honorable discharge, he lived in South-East Minneapolis, where he worked for Laviris and then Graco as a lead man and machinist for 25 years. He was united in marriage to Carolynn Cavender.

He moved back to the Granite Falls area in the mid 1990’s. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ed loved to tinker and was a jack of all trades. He was always working on ideas and inventing items to make life easier. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He liked his trips to the Casino and playing pool where he got the nickname “Fast Eddy”. He also enjoyed cribbage. He was an animal lover and enjoyed spending time outdoors and nature. He cherished his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren were his world. He had a great sense of humor and would like to say he was hilarious. He was a kind, gentle, generous and humble man.

Ed is survived by the love of his life Carolynn Cavender Schommer of Granite Falls; children: Matt (Julie) Schommer of Granite Falls, Dawn Chase of Granite Falls, Kari (Allen) Redwing of Granite Falls and Lisa (Russell) Leaf of Granite Falls; 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, soon to be 24; as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, children Edward G. Schommer, Scott Schommer and infant Mary Fern and grandson Nicholas Schommer, brothers: Valentine, Clarence, Elmer, John, Andy and Francis Schommer and his beloved dog Nipper.
