Eddy Henry Nystrom was born on August 2, 1942 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He passed away Saturday, October 25, in Surprise, Arizona from pancreatic cancer.
Ed moved around a lot growing up, living in Minnesota and then for most of his childhood years in Oregon. He often talked about his memories of picking berries in Oregon--something that started his life-long love of berry pie. Ed attended high school in Oregon, Minnesota, and North Dakota, always excelling in sports--both wrestling and football. He graduated from Valley City State University in Valley City, North Dakota, where he met his much-loved wife, Sally. Ed earned his masters, specialist, and PhD degrees in education administration from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. During college Ed wrestled, becoming the collegiate North Dakota State Champion at 137 pounds, and was a starter on the football team all four years. He was a tremendous athlete and a leader, always rising to the occasion when needed.
Ed and Sally, both teachers, began their careers in North Dakota, and then moved to Minnesota. Ed taught math and history, and he coached wrestling in each of the schools he taught. He was a gifted coach and had winning teams every place he went. He had profound impact on many of his wrestlers. Ed moved from teaching to school administration while in Willmar, Minnesota. He then moved to Montevideo, Minnesota, where he was the high school principal and school superintendent for many years. In his role as superintendent, Ed was named Administrator of the Year by the Association of Minnesota Office Personnel. He was well liked and respected by students, teachers and staff alike.
In addition to his enthusiasm and dedication to educating and coaching kids, Ed spent much of his time on civic activities. He was a leader in Montevideo, and was named one of that town's first Mover and Shaker awardees. Later in life, Ed developed a love for golf. He enjoyed playing on courses around Minnesota and Arizona, and anywhere else he found himself. He had many golfing buddies in Minnesota and Arizona with whom he loved to get together. He also got back into bowling and tennis while in Arizona and developed many new friendships.
Ed was the very proud father of two daughters--Angela (Mike) Riley and Susan (David) Ellis--and grandfather to seven grandchildren. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 42 years, Sally, who passed away in 2005. Ed was also a beloved brother to his brother Darrell (Sharon) and sister Judy Wichern. Ed accomplished much in his life and lived life to the fullest. He had an incredible optimism and can-do spirit that made knowing him a blessing. He will be missed.
