Donna “Toddy” Van Heuveln, age 94, of Clara City died Monday, May 24, 2021 at the Clara City Care Center. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 28, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Maynard Lutheran Church in Maynard with interment following in the church cemetery.
Donna “Toddy” Mae Lou Van Heuveln was born on September 29, 1926 in Raymond, Minnesota, the daughter of Edward and Bertha (Stein) Zurn. Toddy attended the Raymond public schools and graduated with the High School Class of 1944. After graduation, she moved to the Cities and began working in the factory making ammunition for World War II.
Toddy was united in marriage to Wallace Van Heuveln on October 7, 1947 at the United Methodist Church in Raymond. The couple first made their home in Raymond before moving to Gluek for a few years. They were blessed with four children, Susan, Paul, Daniel and Scott. Toddy worked first in retail buying goods from New York for the VSC stores. Through the years she also worked at the beet plant, Plews Manufacturing, Warner Manufacturing and her last job but perhaps her favorite, was working for the Maynard News.
In addition to working outside the home, Toddy kept busy not only raising her family but was a member of the Kitchen Queens Homemakers group, the Maynard American Legion Auxiliary and the Maynard Lutheran Church. A talent known mostly to family was her ability to paint pictures, Toddy gave many as gifts to those she loved. She enjoyed cooking, traveling with her husband, doing crossword puzzles and writing. Toddy liked keeping up with the local news and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.
Toddy is survived by her children, Susan (Bob) Riley of Granite Falls and Scott (Trudi) Van Heuveln of Clara City; grandchildren: Lori (Tim) Blom; Timothy (Jean) Riley; John (Jennifer) Riley all of Northfield; Bobbi (Randy) Peterson of Clarkfield; Derek (Erin) Van Heuveln of Maple Grove; Amber (Ryan) Verhulst of Blaine; Sean (Hilary) Van Heuveln of Brandon, SD; Kimberly (Eddie) Palicios of Sandtan, AZ; great grandchildren: Jennifer (Nathan), Kyle, Kayla, Marvin, Stephanie, Maddie (Jagger), Nathan, Christine, Brandon, Lauren, Colin, Logan, Grant, Barrett, Etta, Hailey, Allie; great great grandchild, Zoey; brother, Byron (Shirley) Zurn of Peoria, AZ; sister-in-law, JoAnne Zieba of Cambridge; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Toddy is preceded in death by her husband, Wallace, sons, Paul and Dan; daughter-in-law, Vicky; her parents, Edward and Bertha; father and mother-in-law, Claus and Maria Van Heuveln; sister, Creola (Elmer) Taatjes; brother, Loyle “Bud” (Marian) Zurn; brothers and sisters-in-law, LeRoy (Delcia) Van Heuveln, Harm Randt, Ray Zieba.
