Darryl Lavern Anywaush was born in White Earth, MN, on January 29, 1940, the son of Richard L. Smith and Gladys Anywaush Dustybull. He was baptized on April 7, 1940, at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in White Earth and attended Pipestone Boarding School. He moved with his grandparents and brother, Dennis to Heart Butte, MT and at the age of 14, returned with his brother to Minneapolis, MN where he graduated from South High School. Darryl proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1957 to 1963when he met and married Judith Cavender on April 6, 1963, at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Minneapolis. Darryl worked for the City of Minneapolis and graduated from Vermillion Community College at which time he accepted a position working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Grand Portage, MN. He resided with his family for many years in Grand Portage, during which time he also worked for the Forestry Department. He was an active outdoorsman and loved to hunt, fish and just enjoyed nature.In 1977, Darryl earned a teaching certificate at Staples Community College which he used to teach Forestry for the Red Lake Nation and for the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. He later returned to school and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bemidji State University and continued working for the BIA in Bemidji.After retiring from the BIA, he enjoyed a short time of personal freedom before accepting a job with the White Earth Indian Reservation as their Land Manager. He enjoyed working in White Earth and made many friends there. Upon his permanent retirement in 2008, he returned with Judith to Granite Falls, MN, where he enjoyed spending time with his family. Darryl's favorite pastimes were spending time with his grandchildren, reading, talking with his dog- "Ozzie" and watching TV. (Especially Swamp People, Cash Cab, American Pickers, Pawn Stars and anything political.)Darryl was a loving and devoted husband for 48 years, as well as a father, grandfather,brother, uncle and friend. He was called from this life while a patient at the university of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis in the early morning hours of Friday, Nov. 18, 2011. He was 71 years of age.He is survived by his wife Judith of Granite Falls, MN; his daughter Marisa K. Pigeon and his two sons Warren C. Anywaush and Stephen D. Anywaush, all of Granite Falls, MN; grandchildren- Cody T. Pigeon, Naomi A.M. Pigeon & Joshua I. Pigeon, all of Granite Falls, MN; a brother Dennis J. Anywaush of Minneapolis, MN and extended family.Preceding him in death were his parents; his grandparents- William & Elizabeth Anywaush; four uncles- Alex Anywaush, Francis Anywaush, Howard Anywaush and Charles Anywaush; one sister- Sharon Dustybull-Patacsil.
