Cyril "Stub" Scholtes was born on August 2, 1919 in Luverne, MN, the son of Joseph Sr. and Katie (Haas) Scholtes. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and grew up in Wilmont, MN. He graduated from high school in Worthington, MN and attended Worthington Junior College. Stub entered the United States Army in 1942 and spent his first three years in Kingman, AZ. He was then transferred to Germany where he remained until receiving his honorable discharge in 1945. Upon his return, Stub went into the men's clothing business with his brother-in-law, John Palmer. He was united in marriage to Betty L. Kern in 1955 and Stub continued with The Men's Store in downtown Granite Falls, retiring in 1977.Stub and Betty spent their winters in Mesa AZ. He enjoyed all sports, but especially liked baseball. Stub was also an avid golfer and a faithful member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Granite Falls, MN. He died peacefully on Tuesday Feb. 3, 2009, at the Granite Falls Hospital. He was 89 years of age. He is survived by his wife Betty of Granite Falls, MN; his daughter Kathy McDaniel of Eagan, MN and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son David; 3 sisters and 3 brothers.
