Chauncey Alden Balfany was born August 4, 1931 in Lamberton, the youngest of ten children to Carl and Rosella (Kagel) Balfany. He passed away Sunday, December 11, 2016 at the Granite Falls Hospital.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and grew up in the Belview area. Chauncey attended country school and later graduated from Belview High School with the class of 1949.
On February 27, 1953 he was united in marriage to Linnea Ethel Johnson at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Belview. To this union five boys were born.
Chauncey attended teacher training college in Lamberton and taught country school in the Echo area before serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After receiving his honorable discharge in 1954 He returned to teaching and taught country school near Madison.
He accepted teaching positions in Seaforth, Lucan, and Cokato before returning to college to graduate from Mankato State University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. In 1961 he began teaching in Granite Falls, and continued his education receiving his master's degree from Mankato State University in 1968. Chauncey retired from teaching in June of 1987, proudly serving the Granite Falls School District for 26 years.
Chauncey worked as a flax straw buyer for Peter J. Schwietzers and Archer Daniels Midland Corp and painted farm buildings with his brothers during his summer months off from teaching. He was an avid sports fan, especially enjoyed basketball, and followed current events in local and state news.
He enjoyed cooking, old family recipes being his favorite, history, animals, farming with Richard Jepson, and was a member of the American Legion. In 1990, 2000, and 2010 he was involved with the US census.
Chauncey is survived by his wife, Linnea Balfany of Granite Falls; sons: Robert (Kathy) Balfany of Granite Falls; Todd (Lucy) Balfany of Sacred Heart; Tim (Jana) Balfany of Edina; Joel Balfany of Marshall; John (Ann) Balfany of Waconia; 14 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Carl and Rosella Balfany. Siblings: Lucille Dolan, Melvin Balfany, Geneva Rhode, Orville Balfany, Virgil Balfany, Harland Balfany, Dewey Balfany, Evangeline Kohls, and Joan Kettner.
