Charles 'Chuck' Groothuis

Charles ‘Chuck’ Thomas Groothuis was born on May 13, 1944, in Willmar, MN, the son of Lubbert and Margaret (O’Connor) Groothuis. He attended country school in Havelock Township and then went to school in Maynard.
On May 22, 1965, Charles was united in marriage to MaryAnn Suter in St. Clara Catholic Church in Clara City. He was employed by the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad, the Gluek Co-op Elevator, farmed for a time and then worked for the Clara City Farmer’s Elevator until his retirement. Following his retirement, Charles continued to help at the elevator and assisted his son Troy in his farming operation.
Charles enjoyed spearfishing, pheasant and deer hunting with family and friends. He loved attending all the activities his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were involved in and enjoyed helping out during harvest, running the engine to load train. He was the ‘OFFICIAL’ foreman of all family projects. He just, plain and simple, enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a faithful member of St. Clara Catholic Church.
On Saturday, February 18, 2017, Charles was called from this life while a patient at CHI St. Alexius Hospital in Devil’s Lake, ND. He was 72 years of age.
Surviving family include his wife MaryAnn of Clara City; children- Troy (Danelle) Groothuis of Maynard, Shannon (Doug) Mittag of Willmar, and Brandon Groothuis (Christie Cameron) of Island Park, ID; grandchildren- Jessica (Michael) Korsmo, Kirsten (Joseph) Hutt, Nicholas Groothuis, Matthew Mittag (fiancé Christina Bond) and Nathaniel Mittag; great grandchildren- Ethan, Abbigail and Sophia Korsmo & soon to be baby Hutt; brothers- Ralph (Carmen) Groothuis and Roger (Shirley) Groothuis; sisters-in-law- Sally Groothuis and Lillian Groothuis; sisters and brothers-in-law on MaryAnn’s side of the family and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
