Bruce James Abernathy was born August 6, 1956 to Huey and Martha (Nordang) Abernathy in Granite Falls, Minnesota. He attended high school in Granite Falls. As an adult, Bruce was baptized in the Christian faith. Bruce worked for Gary at Jacobson’s Tree Service for many years. He then worked for the cities of Willmar REA and Granite Falls removing tree branches from power lines. He started his own painting company where he and Debbie painted barns and houses. He also owned Regancy Limousine. Bruce was finally able to accomplish his dream of building his own sound and lighting company, Abernathy Sound and Lighting. He ran the sound and lighting for many bands including Queen Colleen and the Frey Daddies. When he wasn’t busy running sound and lighting, he worked in his shop fixing motorcycles, snowmobiles, lawn mowers and anything anyone brought to him.
Bruce was united in marriage to the love of his life, Debbie Johnson on September 10, 2016, at the Magnuson farm in Granite Falls, Minnesota.
Bruce enjoyed riding his Harley, camping in his RV, cutting wood, listening to all types of music, doing research, and spending time with his family and friends. Bruce’s favorite place to be was at home, on the Minnesota River, with his wife.
Bruce was a Christian, a music lover, a jack-of-all trades, loyal, supportive, encouraging, and a seeker of knowledge. On June 16, 2017, after a fight with cancer, Bruce passed away, in his home, surrounded by his family.
Bruce is survived by wife Debbie; stepchildren: Kris (Carter) Ricks, Jamie Ellingboe (Sonja Zimmerman), Shana Ellingboe (Chris Anderson), Jeremie Ellingboe (Jennifer Galow); three very special grandchildren: Rene Basaldua-Anderson, Melena Lee Anderson, and Curtis Ricks; three brothers: Richard (Linda) Abernathy, Howard (Karen) Abernathy, Roger (Sarah) Abernathy; six nieces and nephews: Jennifer (John) Lockner, Jason (Velma) Abernathy, Angella Abernathy (Travis Robertson), Teresa Abernathy (Tino Salinas), Patrick Abernathy, and Matt (Fujimmi) Abernathy and several great nieces and nephews.
