Bradley Gordon Westby was born in the early morning hours of July 11, 1975 at the Dawson Hospital, Dawson, Minnesota to Gary and Sue Westby. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson and attended Dawson-Boyd Schools with the class of 1993.
Brad was active in Boy Scouts and he attended Many Point Boy Scout Camp for several years. He enjoyed bowling from an early age and was on a youth league which led to bowling with his dad and brother on the men’s league at Dawson Bowl. He spent time golfing with friends and fishing. Brad especially enjoyed time up north at Emily, Minnesota with his family at a resort they loved.
Brad enjoyed traveling and spoke frequently of his trip to Hawaii. One of his dreams was to return to Oahu or the Big Island to live someday. He was especially interested in his visit to Punchbowl Cemetery (National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific) where his great-uncle Kenneth Westby is noted on the “Courts of the Missing”. These walls commerate over 28,000+ soldiers and seamen buried at sea, lost or missing.
He faithfully followed the Twins and Vikings and attended the events held both in the metro area and in Montevideo. He loved going to the games and watching them on TV. He followed the careers of many players even after they left the Minnesota teams.
Brad’s true claim to fame was trivia. There were many times he was fielding phone calls from family and friends to answer an obscure question. Brad often said he was a “fount of useless knowledge”.
Through the years he was employed at Dawson Dairy Queen, Larson Tiling, Chandlers, Avicenna, & Jenni-O Turkey. He loved cooking and bartending. He worked in various restaurants and clubs and also He owned his own restaurant “Westby’s 212 Restaurant” in Dawson.
When he went through his first bout of melanoma in 2011 he had two major surgeries in one week and five and a half months of interferon therapy. When he finally gave up, quit the therapy, he was fortunate enough to have been on it long enough that he was pronounced cancer-free.
Because of his love of computer gaming and science fiction, he returned to school at Ridgewater College for computer programming and found a profession that challenged him.
On April 18th when he received the diagnosis of cancer again he opted for immunotherapy. The melanoma was in his lungs, liver, lymph system, a tumor wrapped around his colon and there was one tumor in the atrium of his heart. He had one dose of immunotherapy but never made it to the second treatment.
After two hospitalizations at Centra-Care in St. Cloud and the final one at Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital, Brad passed away the morning of May 27th with his brother, Dan at his side. He was six weeks shy of his forty-second birthday.
