Betty Lou Scholtes was born August 4th 1928 in Redwood Falls, MN to Lawrence and Florence Kern of Olivia, MN. She grew up on a farm south of Olivia with 3 sisters and a brother. She attended a one room country school until her 8th grade year when she attended Olivia High School and graduated in 1946 as valedictorian. She then went on to St. Cloud teacher’s College to earn her teaching diploma. She taught 4th grade for 2 years in Renville, MN and 4 years in Granite Falls, MN. In between school years she was going on trips with her sister Janice, friends, and fellow teachers or waitressing at resorts. These adventures included a 9 city trip out east, a couple Black Hills and Devil’s Tower trips, and Southern California and Tijuana Mexico. She waitressed at Yellowstone National Park, and Peters Sunset Beach Resort in Glenwood, MN.
It was in Granite Falls where she met her future husband Stub (Cyril) Scholtes. They were united in marriage on February 17th 1955. She then became a professional housewife and mother, raising 2 children.
She enjoyed bridge, golf, and reading. She had many creative talents including: knitting, crocheting, baking incredible cinnamon and caramel rolls, decorative painting and making beautiful floral arrangements. She and Stub started their own business making and selling floral pieces and other decorations. They spent many winters in Mesa, AZ. It was there she learned the art of wood carving and went on to create beautiful Santa’s and St. Nicholas’s, and then life sized birds.
She was an active member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church where she taught religion classes. She was also part of the Hospital Auxiliary and served as president.
In 2011 she moved to the Twin Cities to be closer to her daughter. She went home to the Lord on May 18th, 2015 while a patient at Augustana Health Care and Rehab Center of Apple Valley, MN.
She is survived by her daughter Kathy (Scholtes) McDaniel and special friend Paul Brandt, sisters Janice Timm (Dick) of Appleton, MN, Sally Johnson (Don) of Park Rapids, MN, and Shirley Visser (Ted) of Olivia, MN and step mother Lilly Kern of Olivia, MN.
She was preceded in death by her husband Stub, an infant daughter Linda, her son David and brother Douglas. Her love, friendship, humor and sweetness will never be forgotten.
