Betty Lou Melhouse was born on February 6, 1932 to Ann (Janke) and Louie Melhouse in Montevideo. She was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Montevideo. Betty graduated from Montevideo High School in 1950. She worked at Aaker’s Bakery and then at Johnny’s Superfair grocery store where she worked for Johnny Ockwig. On December 6, 1953, Betty was united in marriage to F. Dean Burgess at the Methodist Church. To this union 3 children were born: Greg, Jeff, and JoAnn. Betty and Dean bought Rosy’s Supper Club in 1969. The family worked together at the supper club which was known for its delicious hand cut steaks, seafood, and ribs. Dean passed away in 1984 and Betty continued to run the supper club on her own for 10 more years.
Betty taught her children and grandchildren the value of treating people right and hard work. After she sold the supper club, Betty went back to work at the same grocery store she worked in prior to purchasing the supper club. This time it was Bill’s Supermarket. Betty worked there until she was 83 years old. Betty has spent the last 32 years with her special friend and partner, Elwood Moseng. Betty loved to make good food for her family, friends, and anyone who stopped by the house. The coffee pot was always on with homemade goodies to go with it. For several years, Betty put together boxes of goodies for her children and grandchildren at Christmas. The boxes contained food made with a lot of love including her homemade caramels, fudge, cookies, canned: peaches, pears, dill pickles, apple pickles, tomatoes, goulash, and canned meat.
Betty was a humble person that never thought anything she did was extraordinary, but anyone that tasted her cooking knew that it was delicious and she had a gift of making good food.
Betty passed away surrounded by her children and grandchildren on July 4, 2019 after having been diagnosed with cancer on June 3, 2019. Blessed be her memory.
