Bernard George Hoidal was born on July 14, 1921, in Big Bend Township, near Holloway MN, the son of Jacob & Sina Hoidal. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and attended Holloway High School, graduating from there at the age of 17. On August 22, 1948, Bernie was united in marriage to Helen Aldoris Schlieman at Fairfield Lutheran Church in Holloway. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.Bernie farmed for several years and then built and operated a garage and gas station in Holloway for 10 years. After selling the station, he worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for local road construction crews. He was a proud member of the 49ers Union and received numerous awards and recognitions for his dedicated Union affiliation. He and Helen also owned and managed Hoidal's Trailer Court in Montevideo for 20 years. Bernie and the family enjoyed traveling, camping and summertime adventures together when road work took him to other areas of the state. He and his brother Lyle were celebrated race car drivers, winning more than their share of trophies on the stock car tracks in Montevideo, Appleton, Milbank, Morris and other neighboring communities. Bernie drove car #11 and ½ and ½ and Lyle drove # 32. Bernie also loved hunting, fishing, camping and traveling. He was an avid card player and his greatest joy was when he could spend time with his family, including his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. On Sunday, December 29th, Bernie was peacefully called from this life in the comforting presence of family, while under Hospice care at Meadow Creek Country Living in rural Montevideo. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years- Helen, of Montevideo; his children- Carol Anderson (& fiancé Larry Nelson) of Clinton, Sherry (& Lee) Myhre of Montevideo, Jeanne (& Pat) Cleary of Willmar, and Allen (& Denise) Hoidal of Brooklyn Park; 10 grandchildren- Mike, Julie, Kristin, Eric, Rian, Phil, Stacia, Sara, Ava & Alayna; 10 great grandchildren; a sister Erma Belshaw and brothers Lyle (& Jean) Hoidal and Milton (& Eileen) Hoidal.Preceding him in death were his parents- Jacob & Sina Hoidal and two sisters- Edith & Marilyn.
