Arthur Roder

August 7, 1922 — April 30, 2009

Arthur Arnold Roder was born August 7, 1922, in Grant County, South Dakota, the son of Frank & Nellie Roder. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Lawrence Church in Milbank, South Dakota. Art served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945. Following his military service, Art moved to Montevideo to join his brother to work on the railroad. He then began working at a grocery store and later became the owner and operator of Westside Grocery. He was united in marriage to Elsie Paulson on May 22, 1947, at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church parsonage in Montevideo. Together they ran the grocery store for 55 years. Art was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 380, the American Legion and Montevideo Baseball Association. He was also a member of the Montevideo Planning and Zoning Board. Art enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing, watching sports, recycling aluminum pop cans and most of all ?having fun?. Art passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at the Methodist Hospital in Minneapolis. He was 86 years old.He is survived by his wife; four children: Franklin (Barbara) Roder and James Roder of Montevideo; Elaine (Mike) Marth of Eden Prairie; and John Roder of Minneapolis; four grandchildren: Michelle Roder of Alexandria; Melissa Roder of Fargo, North Dakota; Ashley Roder of Alexandria and Ben Hendrickson of New Hope; one great grand daughter, Santana Roder of Fargo, North Dakota; and one sister, Lucille Mueller of Ortonville. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Clarence, Leonard and Raymond; four sisters: Alice, Ida, Helen and Marie; one grandson Noel Roder and a daughter-in-law, Julie Roder and two cats, Blackie & Whipper.
