Arlin Burton Curtiss was born July 24, 1929, in Harrison Township, the son of Homer and Ruth Curtiss. He grew up on a farm near Atwater, MN, where Arlin attended school through the eighth grade, at which time he focused his work ethic on providing for his family.
On February 1, 1947, he was united in marriage to Velma Maxine Koch. Together they moved to Montevideo where they started a family and Arlin Curtiss Trucking. Arlin logged millions of miles on American and Canadian highways over the years, while Velma focused on raising their family and managing all of the bookkeeping for the business. In what little spare time he had, Arlin was a diehard sports fan of all Minnesota teams, but the Twins held a special place in his heart.
Arlin and Velma were married for 65 years and if you asked him what his most successful accomplishment was, he would undoubtedly say “my family”. Their unconditional love has been the shining example for the family that now span four generations.
When Velma was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Arlin willingly accepted his new role and responsibilities of caring for his “bride”. He lost the love of his life in March 2012 and her absence was deeply painful. As one love was lost, another was found, as he became reacquainted with a lifelong friend, Eunice Skeie. In October 2013, they held a commitment ceremony under God. Eunice’s kind and gentle demeanor brought joy and comfort to Arlin and they remained loving companions until his death.
Arlin is survived by his children: Arlin D. “Butch” and wife Carol; James “Jim” and wife Cheryl; Jill Steen and husband Douglas all from Montevideo; Jerrell “Jerry” and wife Donna from Huntsville, Alabama, and Sheila Larson and husband David from Dawson. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; his sisters: Eileen, Shirley, Marlene, and Judy; and loving companion, Eunice Skeie and her children.
Preceding Arlin in death were his wife, Velma; his parents: Homer and Ruth Curtiss; and 3 brothers: Wally, Sheldon, and Bud. May he rest in peace.
