Mark Anderson, 62, of Granite Falls, passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at the Granite Falls Care Center. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 5th from 3 to 5:00 pm at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home.
Mark Verne Anderson was born at the Granite Falls Hospital on June 3, 1961 to Verne and Mae (Rude/Midthun) Anderson. He was baptized at Granite Falls Lutheran Church on July 16, 1961 and confirmed on September 26, 1976. Mark attended school at Bert Raney Elementary and Granite Falls High School.
Mark was united in marriage at the United Congregational Church to Jackie Cameron in 1995. He acquired an instant family and enjoyed his role as dad to stepdaughter, Katie.
Mark worked at the Granite Falls Elevator for several years before he took a job working road construction with Mooney’s, which later became Duininck Construction. He primarily drove truck for the gravel crew. A back injury at work in 1998 resulted in surgery and ultimately ended his career in construction in 2003.
Mark enjoyed bowling, playing cards with friends, hunting, and fishing. He followed in his dad’s footsteps and loved to fish. When his back no longer allowed him to fish and hunt, he enjoyed feeding corn to the pheasants in the winter and taking drives along the river road. Mark grew up with cats and continued to have a cat or two as pets throughout his life. His garage was a social hub for his friends. He’d cut up wood and have fire in the fire pit where everyone would gather. His friends fondly referred to him as “Sparky”.
Mark had a kind heart. He helped provide care for his parents during the end of their lives by checking on them and helping with any needed tasks. He played Santa for many of his friend’s children over the years. He would dress up on Christmas Eve and deliver prearranged gifts to delighted children.
Mark continued to have complications with chronic back pain, had a history of strokes, and required some care. He resided at the Avera Care Center where he died on Wednesday, December20th.
Mark is survived by his stepdaughter, Katie Byrd (Jai), step grandchildren, Zach (Desire), Brandon, Gabby, and Seth and step great grandson, Braxton all of Grand Rapids. His siblings: Steve Midthun (Sue) of Granite Falls, Sue Nelson (Bryan) of Redwood Falls, Tom Midthun (Char) of Granite Falls, Mary Rice (John) of Renville, and David (Dawn) Anderson of Granite Falls. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
