Lorraine Miller, age 96, of Montevideo, Minnesota passed away Friday, August 19, 2022, at Luther Haven in Montevideo. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Salem Lutheran Church in Montevideo with burial Wergeland Cemetery in Porter, Minnesota. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Lorraine Lois (Toov) Miller was born on September 9, 1925, on a farm in Fenton Township, Murray County, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Edward and Rose (Oeffner) Strampe. Lorraine grew up on the family farm near Chandler and was baptized on October 11, 1925, and later confirmed on April 10, 1938, both at the Zion Lutheran Church in Iona. Her first eight years of education began in District #99 rural school and continued through her junior year in Chandler High School. She stayed with Grandma Oeffner during her senior year, graduating from Paullina High School. The following year she attended Normal Teacher’s Training in Canby. Lorraine began teaching in the Fall of 1944 and continued teaching for five years in rural schools of Murray County. Each summer, she furthered her education going to Mankato State, St. Cloud State and workshops.
While going to Normal Teacher’s Training in Canby, she met Warren Lee Toov. They were married on August 26, 1949, at the Lake Wilson Lutheran Church. The couple lived in Porter, Ivanhoe and Montevideo. Warren died in September of 1977.
In September of 1952, during the epidemic, Lorraine was inflicted with polio. It left her paralyzed on her right side and after much exercise, therapy and help from her family and friends, she regained the ability to walk.
After returning to Montevideo, she resumed teaching in District #129 Country School for two years and then continued her education, receiving her 4-year B.A. teaching degree from Morris University in 1970. She continued teaching in Montevideo District #129 Elementary School until she remarried. Herbert E. Miller was a former friend and on September 29, 1979, they were married and moved to Arizona where Herb was an administrator at a Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Peoria. They spent winters in Arizona and summers in Minnesota. After Herb was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, they moved to Montevideo in order to be closer to family.
Lorraine is survived by her two children: Allen Lee (Kathy) Toov of Austin, Linda Rose (Allan) Adams of Montevideo; 7 grandchildren: Bryan (Sarah) Toov, Mark (Alysa) Toov, Neil (Becca) Toov, Emily (Dan) McGonigle, Heidi (Jared) Huseby, Warren (Carrie) Adams, Elizabeth (Bobby) Geurtz; 18 great grandchildren, Nora & Lydia Toov, William and Thomas Toov, Nicolas (Betsy) Shadowick, Mason Anderson, Ezra, Evan, Hannah, Sahnje, Seth & Sean McGonigle, Marienau & Nya Huseby, Reece Adams, Margaret Nelson Adams, Opal Geurtz; Herb’s children, Dan Miller, Joan (Darrell) Kalberer, Jane (Tom) Junkert and David (Shirley) Miller; Herb’s grandchildren: Jessica, Lindsey, Angela, Meghan, Katie and Shane; brother, Wesley (Clara Jean) Strampe; sisters-in-law Evelyn Leier, Margie (Jim) Haugen and Beatrice Strampe.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Ed and Rose Strampe, husbands, Warren (Bud) Toov and Herbert E. Miller; two infant sons, Robert Lee and Douglas Dean; her siblings, Dorothy and Vernon; sister-in-law, Pat Toov and brother-in-law Clifford Toov.
